Arial Landscapes (2012-15)
Wartime photographs, reconnaissance maps, and architectural blueprints serve as key influences in my work. The found marks and scars in these sources inspire compositions that evoke structural landscapes, secret escape tunnels, and aerial maps.
Materials and process are central to my practice. Drawing on my background in textiles, I explore mark-making through familiar materials and techniques. I often favor a darning needle over a pencil, experimenting with fabrics as resists, embossing plates, and various tools to create texture and depth. The use of volatile materials—such as a naked flame, fire soot, engine oil, and cement—introduces a dynamic interplay between intentional and accidental marks, further blurring the boundaries between control and chance in the creative process. |
